On September 10, BlackRock announced that it has received regulatory approval to launch the BlackRock HKD Digital Liquidity Fund, marking a significant milestone in the region's digital asset evolution.

This newly approved fund is a Hong Kong-domiciled, HKD-denominated money market vehicle designed to operate across both traditional and digital finance channels. It represents BlackRock's first tokenized product in Hong Kong and the broader Asia-Pacific region, and notably, it is the first money market fund registered in Hong Kong to offer a fixed net asset value to both institutional and retail investors.

The fund integrates blockchain technology with the established characteristics of professionally managed money market funds, allowing a wide range of qualified investors to transact through both traditional and on-chain avenues. This dual-channel approach aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility for all participants involved.

Subscriptions and redemptions for the fund will support both fiat currency and digital cash, including tokenized deposits and fiat-referenced stablecoins. By investing in high-quality, short-term HKD money market instruments such as government bills and deposits, the fund is structured to deliver liquidity, stability, and yield to its investors.

This offering joins BlackRock's global series of tokenized money market funds, which already spans operations in the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. Investors will be able to use HKDAP, a HKD stablecoin issued by Standard Chartered-led initiative, Anchored Fintech, for fund subscriptions and redemptions.

Where the new offering stands

BlackRock Asia-Pacific head, Chen Huilan, emphasized that Hong Kong has consistently served as a vital hub connecting global investors, markets, and ideas. She highlighted that the city's robust financial infrastructure, international outlook, and dedication to responsible innovation create ideal conditions for advancing next-generation investment solutions. Chen expressed confidence that tokenization can boost efficiency and accessibility while strengthening connectivity between traditional investment and digital finance infrastructure, ultimately enabling capital to flow more effectively across financial markets.

She further noted that this fund continues BlackRock's global push into tokenization, reflecting the firm's commitment to developing innovative investment solutions that address evolving client needs.

Meanwhile, Dan Maley, BlackRock's Asia-Pacific head of Cash Management, pointed out that cash remains an essential tool for corporations, financial institutions, and individuals managing liquidity. As digital cash and tokenized finance become more prevalent, he observed a growing market demand for high-quality products that can integrate with the digital finance ecosystem. The convergence of traditional and digital markets positions this fund to provide more flexible cash investment options for a diverse range of investors.

Partner perspectives on the launch

Ole Matthiessen, Global Head of Transaction Services and Digital Assets at Standard Chartered, expressed enthusiasm about combining expertise in traditional custody and digital assets to support BlackRock's first tokenized money market fund in Asia-Pacific. He described this major milestone as validation of the strong belief in tokenized money's potential to drive innovation in the real economy. Matthiessen looks forward to delivering operational efficiency, liquidity, and asset utilization benefits to clients through tokenization technology, unlocking further value in digital finance.

Dominic Maffei, CEO and Co-founder of Anchored Fintech, noted that BlackRock's decision to launch its first Asia-Pacific tokenized fund in Hong Kong reflects growing institutional recognition that digital assets are steadily integrating into mainstream financial markets. He also highlighted Hong Kong's robust regulatory framework and thriving digital asset ecosystem as key factors in this decision. Maffei expressed pride that HKDAP can participate in this development, connecting tokenized funds with real-world asset investment opportunities through a trusted and regulated HKD stablecoin.
